Praised by Fanfare magazine, Hayk Melikyan is recognised internationally by classical music audiences and critics alike as one of Armenia’s most versatile and imaginative musicians and among today’s most engaging virtuoso pianists.
He studied at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan and leads an active concert life, playing throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas. Melikyan is a laureate of numerous international piano competitions, including the Orléans Concours International and the IBLA Grand Prize. In 2012 he was awarded a Gold Medal by the Moscow Composers Union for his contribution to, and promotion of, contemporary music. In 2013, he received the title of Honoured Artist of the Republic of Armenia. Melikyan’s solo album Arutiunian: Complete Piano Works (GP718) received The Best Classical Album prize at the annual 2018 Swallow Music Awards in Armenia.
Melikyan has given premières of numerous works by contemporary composers and a number of pieces have been specially written for him. In 2009 he devised a concert series, 1900 , dedicated to 20th-century and contemporary piano music. Hayk Melikyan has worked with renowned composers such as György Kurtág, Tigran Mansurian and Krzysztof Penderecki. In 2018, he was invited to give the Armenian première of Arvo Pärt’s Lamentate with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2019 the Aurora Prize organisation invited him to perform with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Melikyan is also a composer, and has written numerous piano solo, chamber, instrumental, vocal and symphonic works.
